THIS IS HOW WE DO IT

The feelings, thoughts, and reflections of Justin De Leon

My career goal is to conduct biomedical research. So a key asset I must obtain as a work for my degree is lab experience. So for the past year I’ve applied for several labs, each of which has turned me down.

However, recently I was accepted into a biomedical research internship program with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. This a great opportunity to gain some research experience, but the program has placed it on ourselves, the interns, to independently find a lab to join. I’ve met with two labs, and both have essentially offered a position for me.

The tables have now turned. After months of submitting resumes, interviews, all of which end with a rejection, I am now at a position in which I get to choose where I work. Crazy huh?
